Controversial music videos

A controversial video that we found was Rihanna's 'S&M'. In this video she is portrayed as a sex slave wearing clothes that many would find inappropriate and many have said it is basically pornographic.

As well as the visuals the lyrics are also controversial. For example she sings; 'But whips and chains excite me.' This has been looked upon as very controversial as this song was being played on the radio and television. Because of its overt sexual content the video was immediately banned in 11 different countries. As well as this the video has been restricted on Youtube so that only over 18's can view it. When played on the radio, various words were cut out, Rihanna disagreed with this.

The director of the video, Melina Matsoukas responded to all of this saying; 'When I go out to make something I kind of have the intention of it getting banned'. The impact of the director wanting to do this is that it gets a lot of attention by being in the news or word of mouth. This is a very affective way of getting awareness of the song even if it does mean you make people unhappy
