New ideas for filming
We have looked over our footage and edited it, and come to the conclusion we will need to film more footage for our video.
Ideas for new footage:
One idea we have for extra footage is flashbacks, we would desaturate these clips to show they were flashbacks, we would film the artist and his love interest when the were happy before the break up in the song. We would use the same location as the break up and use similar costumes.
Another idea we had was that we would film on a black background with a spot light on him, the shot would be a mid shot and he would sing the chorus in these shots, the artist would be wearing just a black t-shirt.

Theoretical study into audience
Uses and gratification
I would say that people would watch our video when they are trying to compare their life to the lyrics of the song, this would be when they have heard the video somewhere else and have decided they want to watch the video and they me just watch it to reflect their mood and feel like they are not the only one, this is Personal Identity, they may also want to watch it so they can see what the artist (Chris Brown) looks like and they may want to look like him as well so they want to see what he's wearing, what his hair looks like etc.
Others may watch our video as a Diversion, they will try and escape from real life if they are finding it tough, however our video is quite a dark and this may have the opposite effect on people.
They may want to watch the video because they have heard their friends talking about it and would want to know what they are talking about, this will give them more to talk about with their friends and they would be part of the group.
Some may want to watch the video for information, this is called Surveillance, they would watch the video so they can get information about the artist or the band, for instance we have watched a lot of videos to get ideas for our own because they are in the same genre.
Focus and Ambient Audiences
When people go to watch our video for focused reasons they will be watching it to look at the artist, our video sells the artist and as he is seen as attractive they may watch the video just to look at him. The audience may also watch our video because they want to see the story being told, they may like the song and want to see someone else's artistic view of what the song means. we have used a lot of cuts in our video to keep the audience entertained and it has a strong narrative.
Some people may just watch the video in the background because they want to listen to the song, this is an ambience audience, our video has a strong performance from the main artists, it has quick edits so it flows. It has a simple narrative and we change locations a lot.

We have learned how other media students see the artist in their head, as a traditional R&B artist who's main passion is love and isn't afraid to show their feelings through lyrics and body expressions.
The answers we had been given have only reinforced about how correct we were about our creative process. this because we have aimed the video at teenagers between 15- 25 year olds and the feedback given has agreed with our aim. Likewise has occurred with the locations, shot selection performance type and mise-en-scene of the lead singer.

'Behind the scenes'
This is us discussing the lighting in the shot and setting up ready to film.
This is when we were discussing what we are going to film in the shot.
This is us filming the shot.
This is us again assessing a different location, this location was too bright for the camera and we had to move
This is the shot ready to be filmed.
This is a shot being set up to be filmed
Location shots
We first started to film at this location but found the sun light to harsh so you couldn't really see the artists face. Because of this we looked for another bench that was in more of a shaded area.
We used this long path as it had good lighting from the sun and also it is a metaphor for our video as it is the end of a long road. We had a few problems with passing people but overall it was a good location to shoot.
We used this location as it got a bit later as it is quite a shaded area so it gives a dark and gloomy feel as this is when our artist is singing the first verse. The natural worked really well in our favour at this location giving our video a great look.
Nearing the end of our filming we filmed down some streets, taking advantage of the street lights and car lights. I think this worked well as it will give the video a natural feel as cars and pedestrians are passing in the background.
Digital Technologies

Final Cut Express
Blogger
We have used blogger to update our music video project.
Slideshare/powerpoint
We have used powerpoint for some of our blog posts them uploaded them to slideshare, this is an easy way for us to get a lot of images/information on one blog post.
Apple iMac
All of our work on computer has been done on an apple iMac, this is because they are easy to use, good for editing videos and available to us.
Stills Camera
We used a stills camera to take photos for our ancillary project and to take pictures to use in our blog for progress with filming.
I have used twitter to get in contact with Chris Brown to have evidence of us asking him if you we could use his song and do our own video of this song.
Final Cut Express
We have used final cut express to edit our video, we have found this very useful and easy to use as we have already used this on our previous years work. We are using this because it is easy to use, we have access to it and we know how to use it.
Sony Handycam
We have filmed all of our footage on a Sony Handycam, this camera is easy to transport, good quality picture and is available to us.

Mainstream Video - Cuts
We looked at One Direction - Live While We're Young to see how many overall cuts are used during the 3:18 video. Overall the video had 163 cuts, which is the amount we would be aiming for us having more clips reduce the repetition of the video and doesn't make the video boring to watch. In this video it cuts between each band member numerous times so it appeals to the audience as they are allowed to see their 'favourite' band member in different clothes and different styles.
Progress with filming
On our filming day we had a very successful day, We managed to film all of the shots we wanted and some more. we found that when we were filming we had picked a good day for natural lighting in our video, however we were prepared to use artificial lighting as we had two high powered torches.
Problems
we found that the dolly we were planning to use was not good on the paths in cambridge, so we managed to use hand held very steadily, if the shots are a little bit wobbly then we will be using a lot of cuts from the footage so it is not a prolonged shot that will look wobbly.

Location recce
We have performed a location recce on where we will be filming our music video.
Jesus Green:
We have all visited Jesus green and agreed that because of the amount of benches, the size, and the availability we will be using this in our music video.
Drummer Street Bus Station:
WE have all visited the bus station and we agree due to its lack of people at the time we want to film, its lighting and its location it is perfect for us to use in our music video.

Intertextuality videos
A good example of intertextuality in the music industry is the way Lady Gaga copies Madonna. For example Lady Gaga's song 'Alejandro' is very similar about religion as Madonna is in her videos.

The impact of Lady Gaga doing this is that she appeals a lot more to Madonna's fans as they understand what her lyrics and videos are about.
Another example of intertextuality with these two artists is the dance moves and costumes;

Video Script
Here is the script of the first scene were the artist and partner are located on a bench, his partner splits up with him then we will go into the music and the words.
Partner- We need to talk...
Partner- Its over.
We will be filming them talking after the partner says 'we need to talk' with out any sound, then cut back in when she says 'Its over'. then after the line is said, the music will start.

Alternative video
Why does it work?
The videos work because they are different, you have never seen anything like it before and that makes you more interested into the video and they get people taking about it. This means that the video is advertised through word of mouth.

What Techniques do they use?
In the video Mint Julep- To The Sea they use poor mans 3D, they do this by filming with one camera and at the same time filming with another slightly to the side of it.

In the video Is Tropical- The Greeks they use CGI to make it look like the children have real weapons, however the graphic scenes are clearly very cartoon like, this means it is not as shocking but still a very interesting video.
Is there anything we would use in our video?
I feel that the techniques in the videos are to alternative for our video as we are going to stick to the codes and conventions of an RnB music video therefore none of these would fit our video, however they are very good and would suit an Indie-pop song.

Editing Techniques
Iris Editing
This editing technique is used to show an image in only one small round area of the screen. An Iris-Out begins as a pinpoint and then moves outward to reveal the full scene, while an Iris-In moves inward from all sides to leave only a small image on the screen. An iris can be either a transitional device (using the image held as a point of transition) or a way of focusing attention on a specific part of a scene without reducing the scene in size.
Our example of this will be when the artist is walking through the streets and we shall blur out the back ground and se-rounding features and focus on him. This will show how he is only focused on one thing, her, and is oblivious to the outside world.
This is a picture with 'Iris Editing' used. The outside of the picture has been grunged and the main focus is on the bridge.
Jump Cuts
Is an instantaneous cut from one action to another, at first seemingly unrelated, action. Jump cuts will usually call attention to themselves because of the abrupt change in time and/or place. This will be good for us to reflect different body language visuals and facial expession's. This will give the audience a feel to what he is going through.
http://youtu.be/LfpjkO44Rc4 - Video example from the film Rock nd Rolla where jump cuts have been used through the sex scene to show facial expressions.
Dolly Shot
A moving shot taken from a dolly. A Dolly-In moves the camera toward the subject, while a Dolly-Out moves the camera away from the subject. A dolly shot creates a sense of movement through space by capturing changes in perspective. This will be used throughout of the video to get a sense of his surroundings and also to accomplish tracking shots. Also to change the distance from your camera to your performer.
Dubbing (lip sync)
The process of matching voice with the lip movements of an actor on the screen; dubbing also refers to any aspect of adding or combining sounds to create a film's final soundtrack. This will be used for most of our video as we are basing the video around the artist and his feelings through the song and the artist will be lip syncing for a great amount of time.
Controversial music videos
A controversial video that we found was Rihanna's 'S&M'. In this video she is portrayed as a sex slave wearing clothes that many would find inappropriate and many have said it is basically pornographic.
As well as the visuals the lyrics are also controversial. For example she sings; 'But whips and chains excite me.' This has been looked upon as very controversial as this song was being played on the radio and television. Because of its overt sexual content the video was immediately banned in 11 different countries. As well as this the video has been restricted on Youtube so that only over 18's can view it. When played on the radio, various words were cut out, Rihanna disagreed with this.
The director of the video, Melina Matsoukas responded to all of this saying; 'When I go out to make something I kind of have the intention of it getting banned'. The impact of the director wanting to do this is that it gets a lot of attention by being in the news or word of mouth. This is a very affective way of getting awareness of the song even if it does mean you make people unhappy

Mood Board
The Mood Board represents the key concepts in our music video. The pictures shown are two locations, a prop and key place of the opening sequence of the video. The picture of the overcst sky shows what we believe to be the artists mood of the song. The words in the board are love twhich i was what the song is written about and froze is the songs name.

Amateur vs Professional
The main difference between amateur and professional music videos is the quality. Obviously as our budget is very low we cannot use the types of cameras they use, because of this we need to keep the audiences attention by using a wide variety of angles and shot types.
Another difference is that they use professional actors. This gives the video a much better look as it seems almost real, this mean that when shooting our footage we need to try as hard as possible to stay in character at all times and have a lot of enthusiasm.
Budget is also a big difference between amateur and professional music videos. This means that in professional videos they can do a lot more to create an atmosphere. For example they are able to organise a huge crowd or use very expensive props.

Star Analyist
Rita ora's video's portray her as being a 'bad girl' by how she is seen partying in the video 'How We Do'. Also in the video RIP she is swaggering around the warehouse looking like the girl you cant have and with the attitude of her body language showing she is the top girl in the industry. This sells to the target audience, teenagers and younger adults, as this is how this age want to be seen as and also what this age are stereotyped to do. Both video's, for obvious reasons, make Rita the center of attention. Especially in 'How We Do' she is the popular member of the party and everyone ants to be seen with her, this is also how teenagers want to be seen as the heart of the parties and as the cool kid.
Magazine Advert analysis
Magazine advert:
This is a magazine advert for Ellie Goulding's Album 'Lights'
The magazine advert shows the artist clearly and sells her image, the advert is edited so that it looks like their are lights in her hair and all around her, this is because the album is called lights and it sells the album. It has reviews from well known music publications on the advert, this is to sell the album because they are good reviews.
This is a magazine advert for The Kings of Leon. This advert is the same as the album cover. The advert also has songs on it that are well know to sell the album because people will want these songs. The advert also shows when it is released and website adresses where to find the album.

Lyric Analysis
"Froze"
[Verse 1:]
I've lost my temperature
Where've all my sunny days gone
Is there any place to stay warm
It's not easy when your gone
Tell me how I'm s'pose to go on
Right now I don't be strong
With the rain
Comes more pain
U never know (damn the weather)
Hard to hide
When I cry
This pain inside (ain't ge'n better)
Body shakes
I feel so numb (nuuumb)
I'm shiverin
Why did you go
[Chorus]
My body is froze
Every part of me cold
My hearts achin
And I can't breathe
Souls breakin
Minus 31 degreese
Nowhere else to go
Froze
[Verse 2:]
My heart stuggles to beat yeah
I need a life line
And I would rather die
Before I, start to freeze yeah
Live my life in fear, no way
With the rain
Comes more pain
U never know (damn the weather)
Hard to hide
When I cry
This pain inside (ain't ge'n better)
Body shakes
I feel so numb (nuuumb)

The mood of this song is quite down beat in the way it is about a break up. Because of the fact that the song is very personal we have decided to only really have one main character.

Test Footage
This is the edited version of our test footage. During the filming we used various shot types and angles that we are going to use in our final piece. From doing this filming we learnt that some things worked well and some didn't.
For example we used the dolly to go around our artist. As you can see in the video it is very shaky, this was because of the surface we were using it on as well as the dolly its self. From this we have learnt that if we are going to use that shot type that we need to either use something else or find a very smooth surface.
Something that we were really happy with was a filter on the camera. We used this at the beginning of our footage to fade in. We thought this looked really good and have a nice effect on the video and would suit our genre.
We've also learnt from this footage that we need a bigger variety of camera angles and do a lot more quick cuts. The reason for this is so we keep the audience interested and want to carry on watching the rest of our video.
